Immutable

(A Fancy Word for Unchangeable… that Means Everything for Us)

God. Doesn’t. Change.

For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

Malachi 3:6 ESV

People change. Circumstances change. Our feelings change. Cultures change. Our health changes. Our perspective changes. People’s affection changes. Their approval of us changes.

Change is hard. It can create fear or frustration. Disappointment or despair. It can leave us grasping for control or seeking comfort in the temporary.

But… God doesn’t change. He AND His promises remain the same. Throughout all of time. Therefore, my friends, we will not be consumed by a life that is unpredictable.

When we follow Jesus we are immediately placed in the hand of an unwavering God. One who’s faithfulness becomes our fixed foundation.

fear not, for I am with you;

    be not dismayed, for I am your God;

I will strengthen you, I will help you,

    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

Let me give you a little glimpse of the outward change, in a span of just four fly by years, in my own family.

Our gang circa 2014

I mean come on, all of my five babies, decided they would just breeze by me in height, in the amount of time it took me to make their breakfast. How dare!

Our much taller gang circa 2018

And that was just externally. The amount of transition and change that occurred in our family during those wisp of a few years is dizzying. New locations, new state, new home, new schools, new jobs, new church, new ministry, new friends, new neighbors, new losses, new gains, new trials, new triumphs. Same God.

Change will not be the end of us.

When I’m feeling the weight of living in an unpredictable world, I’ve learned to grasp for the One certainty.

I’ve learned, through a mess of change, to trust in a God who’s faithfulness redeems my failures, and those of a broken world.

If we are unfaithful,

    he remains faithful,

    for he cannot deny who he is.

2 Timothy 2:13 NLT

My favorite attribute of God’s unchangingness is His radical love for us. Unconditional. Unmerited. Unwavering. Love. For us.

The entire chapter of Psalm 136 speaks God’s love over and over us!

It is he who remembered us in our low estate,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

 and rescued us from our foes,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Psalm 136:23-24

When circumstances or people or my own emotional junk begins consuming my conscience, I have a choice. To slide down that slippery slope of fear and fret or to deep dive into who God is and what He says.

Choosing the latter always becomes worth that step of faith. It result in a personal, loving God casting a net of His truth around my out of control world. The result is a divine peace my friends, that honestly, I should not have.

My dears, when all around us is shifting sand, He is worthy of holding on to.

XOXO,
